Employee Handbook Updates – 2024

Hello and welcome to LegalEase. Today’s topic is about Employee Handbook updates for 2024. Although state laws vary, I would like to talk about some of the hot button topics.

  • We all know that we need to update employer pay policies because about twenty-two states have increased minimum wage pay. Look out for this change in your state.
  • Many states are changing leave laws. Illinois, California, and I think Minnesota have actually made changes to provide paid sick leave. Many other states have added modifications to their leave laws. Check your state law and make sure that your handbook is compliant.
  • Update your EEO policies. Several states now follow the Crown Act. About twenty states so far have signed the Crown Act, which is a statute that says you cannot discriminate based on hair texture or hairstyles. Make sure that’s in your policy handbook, if in fact your state follows the Crown Act.
  • Another EEO update for states include the use of cannabis. Some states, like California and Washington, for example, say employers cannot discriminate against employees for off-duty cannabis use. Again, check your state law for similar statutes.

These are a few hot button issues that you want to include in your policy updates if they apply to your state.
